Printing is the number one industry in this quad-state region with almost every major printer represented along the I-81 corridor between Harrisburg, PA and Harrisonburg, VA. In this region, over 8,000 employees work at over 200 printing and allied industries.
In August of 1998, a small group of printers and economic development representatives met to discuss the challenges facing the industry. Three areas of concern were identified:
- The printing industry does not always do a good job in marketing itself. There is a need to promote printing careers to attract new employees to our growing businesses.
- Secondary (high school) education needs support and participation in order to graduate students with the skills needed for jobs in the printing industry.
- Employees currently working in the printing industry need the opportunity for continued learning leading to a post-secondary degree. With these issues in mind, the Regional Printing Industry Advisory Group (RPIAG) was formed with a membership of printers, economic developers and educators.
RPIAG then laid the groundwork for the Regional Printing Institute to address these areas of concern.
Regional Printing Institute (RPI) has become the cornerstone of the workforce development center offered through two West Virginia institutions, James Rumsey Technical Institute, a regional vocational/technical school, in Martinsburg, and the Shepherd Community and Technical College in Martinsburg.
Staying true to their mission and purpose, RPI strives to offer customized training opportunities, to best suit the needs of businesses in this region. If the need is for online training or a more structured program to receive your certification as a Certified Printing Service Specialist, RPI has the ability to serve those needs…strengthening the industry one student at a time.
