Intermediate Web Development
Learn to use intermediate techniques to add interactivity and productivity to your website. Students will publish their sites on a web server.

Suggested prerequisite: Introduction to Web Page Development or equivalent experience.
Text: Instructor will provide materials.
Duration: nine 3.5 hour sessions.
  1. Internet Fundamentals
    1. Introduction to Networking and protocols.
    2. Understanding TCP / IP.
    3. Publishing a website with an FTP client.
    4. Using Server Side Includes and scripting.
  2. Design Methodology
    1. G.U.I. HTML editors
    2. Controlling page appearance.
    3. Designing for future expansion
  3. Using Adobe Photoshop to create web graphics
    1. Getting to know the work area.
    2. Working with selections.
    3. Layer Basics.
    4. Creating Web Graphics Using Slices and Rollovers.
  4. Common Gateway Interfaces
    1. Introducing the Common Gateway Interface (CGI).
    2. Using a CGI as a form handler.
    3. Defining the CGI variables to work with your server.
    4. CGI permissions and formatting (ASCII).
    5. Installing a form handler on your server.
    6. Testing the form handler.
  5. Java Script Basics
    1. Creating Java Scripts in Word Pad.
    2. Modify an existing script to suit your needs.
    3. Testing the Java Script.
  6. Cascading Style Sheets
    1. Understanding CSS classes and identities.
    2. Using CSS to position elements absolutely.
    3. Using CSS to create default font specifications for your web.
Class Assignments
  1. Intermediate Web Development worksheet.
  2. An essay on one of the following topics:
    1. Design methodology.
    2. Dynamic HTML.
    3. Overview of popular web publishing applications.

    4. Essay guidelines: Show that you have researched and provide factual information on the selected topic.
  3. Build and publish a web site. The site should include but not limited to the following:
    1. At least 4 web pages that have content. (students can use the work from previous class)
    2. An externally linked Cascading Style Sheet with font and positioning styles defined.
    3. Original artwork created and optimized in Adobe Photoshop.
    4. A Common Gateway Interface (CGI) installed and tested on your site.
    5. A working Java Script.
