Print Academy

Course Objective: To prepare students for the CPSS exam or to introduce employees to graphic communications through self paced study and supported by plant tours and classroom instruction.

Part One: Self-Paced Study
  • Each week, students receive a lesson plan: reading, internet search, homework questions, etc. Students are solely responsible for motivating themselves to complete the assignment in the appropriate time frame. There will be periodic quizzes which will need to be returned to the RPI to monitor students’ progress.

March 5 – mail chapters 3, 4 and 5. A Key to Success, The Written Word, Tools to Help You Do Your Job.
March 12 – mail chapters 8, 9 and 10 Time Management, Art of Supervising, Legal Issues
March 19 – mail chapters 11, 12, and SAFETY material Production Planning, Systems for Smooth Work Flow. QUIZ.
March 26 – mail chapters 13, 16, 23 Press Checks, Prepress, Electronic Image Management
April 2 – mail chapter 15 Intro to Printing Processes
April 9 – hand-out chapters 27 and 33 Labels and Packaging
April 16 – mail chapters 21,22 and 26 Bar Codes, Computer Driven and Envelopes
April 23 – mail chapters 18 and 20 Paper and Ink QUIZ
April 30 – mail chapters 31, 17, 14, and 30 Magazine Production, Binding and Finishing, Your Merchandise in Transit, Book Specifications.

Part II: Classroom Instruction and Plant Tours
  • CPSS candidates will be given first opportunity to fill this part of the program – limited to 20.
  • Next, enrollments will be taken from others in the industry who need this type of program to “jump start” them into graphic communications. This part would be appropriate for the new sales rep, CSR or others who have been placed on a fast track within an organization.

9:00am – Pre-Exam
10:00am – Classroom time – topic: The Basics of Color Theory.
BREAK
11:15am – Classroom time – topic: Paper
12:15pm – Lunch at JRTI
12:45pm – Bus departs JRTI
1:00 pm – Quad Graphics – presentation on GRAVURE and pressroom tour
3:00pm – Bus departs Quad Graphics.
3:30pm – Dalb, Inc – presentation on SCREEN printing and plant tour (snack provided)
5:00pm – Bus arrives back at JRTI. Group meets to discuss the days events
6:00pm – Day one is complete

4:45pm – Free time and dinner on your own
6:00pm – Review of course material completed prior to arrival at conference. Discussion regarding CPSS exam
